This project was recognized for its place in the landscape. Situated on 185 acres along the shores of Lake Michigan, the 39,000 square foot “green” facility is one of the most environmentally sensitive buildings in the nation.
The architects were commissioned to design a building that preserves the natural sanctuary of the site and educates the public about sustainability and the natural world. A primary design challenge was to integrate sustainable design principles into a highly functional and aesthetically pleasing building.
The building’s energy-efficient design helps create an “energy flywheel” to stay cool in summer and warm in winter. A geothermal heat pump provides supplemental heating and cooling.
The building, with its expansive outdoor porches, creates a welcoming place for visitors to gather and view the woods and the lake beyond. |
