Program & Event Update
Here are a few upcoming AIA/CES programs. Click on program title for additional details.
In a letter to the NCARB Board of Directors, AIA Wisconsin President James Otto, AIA, encouraged NCARB to reconsider its decision to increase various fees because they will impose a financial hardship on many architects and interns. Otto noted in the letter that “[a]s we all struggle to survive these tough and troubling economic times, many of us are particularly concerned about the adverse effect on interns and the future of our profession.” NCARB changed its fees effective July 1. AIA Symbol Use
The AIA “Rules of the Board” related to how firms may use the AIA name and the Institute’s column and eagle symbol were recently amended. According to these rules, when the majority of financial ownership in a professional architectural firm is held by registered architects and all the registered architect principals are AIA members, the firm may use the phrase “Members of The American Institute of Architects” in its public listing and include the Institute symbol on its letterhead, business cards, signs, brochures and other business materials related to its practice. No other use of the symbol may be made without specific approval by the AIA Executive Committee.

The new continuing education rules became effective on July 1 and will first apply when you renew your next two-year Wisconsin license by August 2012. Architects will need 24 hours of continuing education, including 16 hours related to health, safety and welfare topics, every two years. The AIA is listed as an approved provider of continuing education programs; and architects can use the AIA/CES transcript to document their continuing education hours. Unauthorized Practice of Law
In 2002, the Wisconsin State Bar petitioned the Wisconsin Supreme Court regarding the unauthorized practice of law. There was concern that this initiative potentially could affect the professional services provided by architects, professional engineers and others. However, as recently determined by the Court, the definition of the practice of law exempts persons credentialed under Wisconsin Statutes in chapters 440 to 480 or persons performing services under the supervision of a professional holding the credential. Architects are credentialed under chapter 443.
