Wisconsin Students Recognized for
Sustainable School Designs

MADISON (June 3, 2009) . . . Five student teams have been recognized for sustainable school designs in the 2009 “Design Your School” High School Design Competition sponsored by AIA Wisconsin, the state society of The American Institute of Architects (AIA), with the support of the Wisconsin Architects Foundation.

Students designed an environmentally sustainable school in this state-wide competition. The type of school and its location were determined by each student team based on the needs of their community. The students are in 9 th -12 th grade and attend Wisconsin high schools. Fourteen teams submitted designs to the competition.

Student teams researched locations, sustainable practices and products, and school design to create presentations for the jury to review. All project submittals were recently displayed at the AIA Wisconsin Convention in Madison. A jury of distinguished architects selected the winning projects. Members of the 2009 jury were: Thomas Cox, AIA, Appleton; Michael Eberle, AIA, Middleton; Jon Sandeman, AIA, Prairie Du Sac; and Alan Ford, Denver, CO.

“The students presented good sustainable concepts,” according to the jury. “Wisconsin students have a lot to contribute to their communities through their creative ideas.”

The student teams selected to receive awards include:

First Place

Bradley Technology and Trade School, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Second Place

Oostburg High School

Team Members: Cory Berger, Tony Denoer, Jordan Fleischfresser, Lance Hacker, Jake Hofteizer, Jake Rauwerkink, Matt TenHaken

Third Place

Waunakee High School, Waunakee, Wisconsin

Team Members: Tyler Burkholder, Alex Dorn, John Lowell, Mike North, Luke Pandow

Honorable Mention

Watertown High School, Watertown, Wisconsin

Team Members: Erika Fortlage, Zack Kassube

Honorable Mention

Platteville High School, Platteville, Wisconsin

Team Members: Ross Martin, Mike Trentz, Trent Udelhoven

Along with recognition, first, second and third place winning schools received cash awards.

Architect-mentors, who are members of the AIA Wisconsin Architects in Schools Committee, were assigned to teams. These architects volunteered their time to work with teachers and provide guidance to students. AIA Wisconsin is a 1,500-member professional society representing architects in private practice, business, industry, government and education.
